The Leschenault Catchment Council has shared advice in their April newsletter for improving your Backyard Biodiversity! Here's the Top 4 Tips for Creating a Fauna Friendly Garden:
- Establishing water sources like ponds, bird baths, or shallow saucers is crucial, particularly in our drying climate. These sources cater to a diverse range of species so remember to ensure safe access and exits to prevent accidental drowning.
- While feeding wildlife is prohibited in Western Australia, planting local native species is a great way to provide essential food sources. Moreover, incorporating plants of varying structures, planting along your fence line and designing small gaps in your fence are all great ways to create safe spaces and passage for smaller birds and animals to evade predators.
- There is a huge variety of artificial habitat structures available to install in your back yard and they are a great way to cater to a target animal. Such structures could include bat boxes, possum boxes, possum dreys, etc.
- Responsible Pet Owners! Keep your pets indoors at night! A number of our wildlife are nocturnal, so keeping your pets indoors at night can greatly reduce the likelihood of your pet interacting with wildlife. Consider structures such as catios to keep your cats contained to your property whilst letting them enjoy the sunshine!
